Fitting in vs. Belonging
“Fitting in is about assessing a situation and becoming who you need to be accepted. Belonging, on the other hand, doesn’t require us to change who we are; it requires us to be who we are.”
This week in my Journey of the Jewel Empowerment group for tween and teen girls, we discussed this topic. Hearing each girl share her story about desperately trying to fit in reminded me of my own struggles-even as an adult-with trying to become what everyone else needed me to be.
Years of being a chameleon just to blend in and be a part of something. Wearing so many different masks. My parents and friends would comment about how “adaptable and friendly” I was that I could fit in everywhere. Sad truth is—I didn’t fit in with myself. I didn’t even know who I was.
Through my own deep spiritual work towards consciousness, I have learned the difference between fitting in and true belonging. I’ve learned—and I am still learning—how to stand in the light of my truth. How to show up unapologetically and authentically as myself now that I know who she is and what she needs. As that started to happen, my tribe appeared. People who love me BECAUSE of who I am, not in spite of it. People who love me, because I love myself.
I found HOME within myself such that now I experience a true sense of belonging within myself and in a small tribe.
I will no longer change myself for anyone!
Seek to belong. Don’t seek to fit in. ❤️
